Abstract

833,252. Pipe joints. INGENIEURTIEFBAU BRANDENBURG VEB. Oct. 19, 1956. No. 31914/56. Class 99(1). In a pipe joint particularly between prestressed concrete pipes, a packing ring 1 between the opposing pipe ends 7 is penetrated by an axially extending steel ring 3 projecting from one of the pipe ends and is surrounded by an annular steel ring 6. As shown, ring 1 has sealing lips 4 which engage in wedge shaped recesses 10 in the pipe ends, the recesses being wider than the lips so as to allow the insertion of rubber pressure rings 8 which force the lips into sealing contact. The angle of slope of the sealing surfaces of the lips may differ from that of the sealing surfaces of the recesses. The steel ring 6 is set in a recess and may be secured to one of the pipe ends or slidably fitted in position. In modifications, Fig. 2 (not shown), the sealing lips are accommodated in annular recesses formed in the bore of the pipes the opposing ends of which have recesses which provide a cavity for the reception of the packing ring, the steel rings are embedded in the opposing end faces of the pipes and a rubber ring is provided between the end faces. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the packing ring is located in a cavity formed by recesses in the pipe ends which have shoulders against which the lips abut and against which the internal pressure forces the lips into sealing engagement, steel rings and a rubber ring being provided as before. The sealing lips or surfaces of the packing ring may be bonded to their complementary surfaces or spring loaded to assist sealing engagement.
