Abstract

833,195. Cast-in-situ concrete piles. MAUNSELL, G. A. Oct. 22, 1958, No. 33732/58. Class 68(2) A composite pile comprises a tubular metal upper part and a solid concrete lower part. The upper part may be filled with reinforced concrete and/or protected by an outer concrete sheath. The pile comprises a cylindrical precast reinforced concrete point F which has a socket A which accepts the end of a steel shank S. The annular space between the two parts is filled with concrete L to provide a rigid water-tight joint, before the pile is driven. The end of the shank is coned C and contains a plug of concrete E in which is embedded reinforcement K. A hammer H, guided by wings V slides inside the shank S and strikes a fibre pad U covered by a plate T. The point F is reinforced around the socket to withstand the bursting stress caused by the hammer blows, the weight of the hammer is equal to the combined weights of the shank and the point. In a modification reinforcement R is lowered on to the plug E after the pile has been driven and the shank is filled with concrete. In a further modification a concrete sheath D is lowered over the shank S and the annular space between is filled with concrete M. Dimensions of a typical pile according to the invention are given.
