Abstract

832,738. Removing flash from moulded articles. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 31. 1957], No. 2489/58. Class 87(2). Flash from a moulded article of rubber or other material decomposable by heat is partially decomposed by heating it, as by a stream of hot gas, whilst shielding at least that part of the article that would otherwise be the most strongly heated. In removing flash 16, Fig. 5, from each of the flanges 12 within passages 11 in a rubber grommet 10, the grommet is placed on a plate 24 carried by an arm 19, Fig. 4, having tubular metal bosses 25 over which the ends of the passages 11 are engaged. The arm 19 is pivotably mounted on a table 20 for movement about a vertical axis, so that grommet 10 may be passed over a slot 30, through which a stream of hot combustion products is passed from a burner 26 to decompose partially the flash 16. The plate 24 and tubes 25 shield the lower part of the grommet 10 from the hot gases. From the slot 30 the grommet is passed over a slot 34 through which a jet of cold air is passed to blow the particles of heat-treated flash through the passages 11. The speed at which the plate 24 is moved may be controlled automatically. Each passage 11 and flange 12 is moulded by by using a core rod 13 and a tubular core 18 as shown in Fig. 1.
