Abstract

<PICT:0726735/III/1> In an apparatus for producing metallic powder, specifically magnesium powder (see Group II) in an inert atmosphere, specifically helium, oxygen and nitrogen are removed from the helium by reaction with magnesium powder. The atmosphere is supplied by a source of commercial helium and this is continuously re-cycled to the purifier 18 which contains trays 82 the bottoms of which consist of a coarse mesh screen mechanically supporting a fine mesh screen over which the magnesium powder is spread. The gas enters at 17 and leaves at 22. Heating gases are fed into the heating chamber 19 via inlet 20 and heat the magnesium powder to a sufficiently high temperature to cause oxygen and nitrogen to react therewith. The atmosphere is also filtered by conventional means.
