Abstract

<PICT:0358086/III/1> <PICT:0358086/III/2> Gases are purified by passage through a semipermeable diaphragm which is heated by an electric discharge passed through the gas; the purity of the diffused gas is tested by spectroscopic observation of the glow caused by the discharge. The discharge passes between electrodes 2, 3, and the diaphragm, which is contained in an anticathode 4, consists of a thin sheet laid between two perforated supporting discs 4a, 4b. The gas to be purified enters by a tube 7, and the pure product leaves by a tube 8. The diaphragm is of palladium, nickel, or quartz for purifying hydrogen, oxygen, or helium respectively. A mica ring 16 protects the diaphragm holder from the heat of the discharge.
