403,170. Annealing ; annealing-boxes. VEREINIGTE STAHLWERKE AKT.-GES., 67, Breitestrasse, Diisseldorf, Germany.- (Assignees of Schmitz, A.; 6, Bergstrasse, Husten, Westphalia, Germany.) Aug. 3, 1932, No. 21778. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1931. [Class 72.] In the bright annealing of metals, especially sheets, a protective gas such as coke-oven or producer gas is introduced at various points of the annealing-box only after the metals have cooled below the annealing temperature and preferably down to about 400‹ C. The protective gas is purified before entry into the annealing box by passing it over a heated contact substance which removes the oxygen therein. In one form of apparatus, Fig. 2, the lower rim of the annealing cover 6 is provided with a pipe 7 having uniformly distributed orifices 8 through which the gas enters the box. In another form, Fig. 5, the pipe 7 with orifices therein is disposed below the annealing stand 10.
