Abstract

<PICT:0955825/C1/1> In the production of a gaseous ozone-oxygen mixture, liquid oxygen is vaporized, and this oxygen is then warmed to a temperature substantially below ambient temperature but above the dew-point of the ozone-oxygen mixture produced and subjected to a silent electric discharge. Preferably the vaporized oxygen is warmed to between - 70 DEG and - 140 DEG C. by the heat produced in the ozonizer. As shown, an ozonizer 4 having a concentric-tube or parallel plate electrode system 6 is suspended above the surface of liquid oxygen 2 in a Dewar vessel 1. A shield 7 surrounds the lower end of the ozonizer so that in its passage to the opening 5, oxygen gas is warmed by heat from the ozonizer. The vessel 2 is provided with a valvecontrolled escape line 8 for oxygen gas. The ozone-oxygen product, which may contain 10 to 15% ozone, leaves through a line 10. If ambient heat and heat evolved by the ozonizer are not sufficient to vaporize the liquid oxygen, gaseous oxygen may be bubbled therethrough or an immersion heater may be provided.
