Abstract
1342159 Drying of coatings REDMAN HEENAN INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 50417/71 Heading F4G [Also in Division B1] Solvent is removed as a vapour from a paint or adhesive coating on a moving workpiece W (which may be a continuous strip or a series of items) by introducing a drying gas into an oven 10 by means of a fan 14, and the exiting mixture of drying gas and solvent vapour is divided at 15 between a recycling duct 16 leading back to the fan 14 and an oxidation duct 17 leading via an infra-red gas spectrometer 18 and fan 20 into an oxidation chamber comprising a catalytic converter (not shown) or a gas burner 23 producing oxidation gases whose temperature is monitored at 19 and which are divided between a waste duct 26 leading to atmosphere via a heat exchanger 27 and a return duct 29 leading back to the fan 14, fresh air drawn in at 32 being passed by a fan 34 directly to the fan 14, or through the heat exchanger to pre-heat the air to the fan 14. The workpiece W may be supported by rollers, or lie on or be suspended from a conveyer. The header 11 has spaced branches 12 provided with nozzles 13 (which may be slots). Dampers may be provided to control the division into ducts 16, 17, and 26, 29. Between 70 and 80% of the exiting gases are recycled via duct 16, and of the 20-30% of the exiting gas passed through the burner 22 between 5 and 55% is passed into the recycle duct 29 and between 45 and 95% into the waste duct. The temperature of the drying gas mixture entering the oven 10 is between 200 and 1000 F. The temperature in the burner is controlled by the thermometer 19 and is sufficient to cause auto-combustion of the solvent vapour which emerges at 1200-1600 F. The solvent vapour concentration is kept in the range 25-40% of the lower explosive limit of concentration.
