Abstract
832,715. Stabilizing ships. SAUNDERS-ROE (ANGLESEY) Ltd., DENNY & BROS. Ltd., W., and BROWN BROS. & CO. Ltd. July 7, 1958 [May 14, 1957], No. 15345/57. Class 113. In a ship stabilizer including a retractable fin 10 carried by the outer end of a shaft 13 mounted to slide in a fixed casing 11, the shaft has adjacent its outer end a bearing 15 carried by a.crosshead 18 sliding in guides 19. The guides are formed by internal surfaces of the casing so that when engaged by corresponding surfaces 20 of the crosshead they prevent angular movement of the latter. The crosshead has wedging surfaces 26 to engage co-operating surfaces 27 on the end of the casing 11 when the fin is fully extended. The inboard portion 30 of the fin shaft is of non-circular cross-section (e.g. an oval of arcs 39, 40) and slides in a sleeve 31 with a correspondingly shaped bore and an outer surface of circular cross-section to which is secured an operating arm 38, so that rocking of the sleeve causes angular movement of the fin shaft. The inboard end of the fin shaft and a part coaxial with it are arranged to form a piston and cylinder for fluid pressure extension and retraction of the fin. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2-4 the inboard end of the shaft 30 carries a circular piston 48 in a cylinder 45 having a clearance 46 between the shaft 30 and its internal surface so that oil supplied to inlets 50 and 51 moves the piston to the right and left respectively to retract and extend the fin.
