[Also in Group XVIII] For stepping round a drum 10 by variable amounts, a plate 13 rotatable relatively to the drum has a rotatable pinion 11 engaged with internal teeth 10<SP>1</SP> of the drum and, when a latch is disengaged from a stirrup 17 on the plate, a counterweight on an arm 22 rotates the plate in the direction of the arrow F until a rod 25 is arrested at a variable point. A spring-loaded clamp 14 and a lever 15, both pivoted on the plate, are carried round with it and a catch 26 on the end of the lever is brought into the path of a lever on a rotating shaft. The latter lever engages the catch and first tilts the lever 15 about its pivot 15<SP>2</SP> so that its head 15<SP>1</SP> cams the latch 14 to lock the pinion 11 on the teeth 10<SP>1</SP> and then the lever drives the plate back to its initial position, taking the drum with it and at this position the lever on the rotating shaft disengages from the catch 26 and the latch again engages with the stirrup 17.
