Abstract

Aqueous urea solutions are concentrated by bringing the aqueous urea into a chamber at a pressure of less than 200 mm. Hg and containing a liquid which is inert to and does not mix with urea and at a temperature such that the urea solution separates into water vapour which is removed and solid urea which is dispersed in the inert liquid and subsequently recovered. The inert liquid may be a mineral oil and should have a low vapour pressure at the temperature and pressure used. The urea may be recovered by heating to melt the urea and separating the urea layer from the inert liquid; the liquid urea may be sprayed conventionally to obtain it in granular form. Where urea has been synthesized in a viscous inert liquid, e.g. mineral oil, the reaction mixture may be passed to the evaporating chamber and urea recovered dispersed in the viscous liquid.
