Abstract
1,261,589. Terephthalic acid recovery. STANDARD OIL CO. 23 May, 1969, No. 26490/69. Heading C2C. A process for the recovery of crystalline terephthalic acid from an aqueous solution at a temperature of 392‹ to 700‹ F. and a pressure to maintain water in the liquid phase, said solution being substantially saturated with terephthalic acid solute and having from 6000 to 500 p.p.m. p-toluic acid based on terephthalic acid comprises cooling the said solution by controlled-rate evaporative cooling (i.e. cooling by evaporation of water from the surface of the liquid phase at a rate which is controlled below the spontaneous uncontrolled vapour release rate or by maintaining a back-pressure) from the aforementioned temperature to a temperature in the range of 245‹ to 300‹ F. and a pressure to maintain solvent water in the liquid phase and recovering terephthalic acid crystalline product by solid-liquid separation at a temperature in the range of 245‹ to 300‹ F. and at a pressure to maintain water in the liquid phase.
