Abstract

The invention comprises 1 - aza - 2,4,9 - trimethyl-thioxanthones having in the 6-position a (tertiary amino)-alkylamino group whose alkylene residue contains at the most 3 carbon atoms and in whose tertiary amino group the nitrogen atom is bound to two alkyl or o -hydroxyalkyl residues each having at most 4 carbon atoms, or an alkylene, oxaalkylene, or azaalkylene radical containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms, and their acid addition salts, and the preparation thereof by (a) reacting a 1-aza-2,4,9-trimethyl-thioxanthone which contains in the 6-position a hydroxyl group reactively esterified with a strong acid, e.g. a chlorine atom, with the low molecular (tertiary-amino) alkylamines; if desired, the chlorine atom is reacted first with a lower alkylamine whose alkyl residue contains a hydroxyl group, the hydroxyl group is then esterified with hydrochloric acid and the chlorine atom exchanged for the low molecular tertiaryamino group; or (b) reacting a 1-aza-2.4.9-trimethyl-thioxanthone, containing in the 6-position an amino group, with the corresponding (tertiary amino)-alkyl chloride. The pharmaceutical compositions are used for enteral or parenteral administration in the form of tablets or dragees, solutions, suspensions or emulsions. The compositions may contain auxiliary substances such as preserving, stabilizing, wetting or emulsifying agents, salts for the variation of the osmotic pressure or buffer substances. They may also contain other therapeutically active substances. An example of a tablet composition is given.
