Abstract
The invention comprises: (a) substituted glutaconimides of the general formula <FORM:0831366/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 each represent an aryl or alkyl radical, R3 represents hydrogen or an alkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl radical, R4 hydrogen or an alkyl radical and R an alkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl radical; (b) the preparation of compounds (I) by condensing (preferably in an ether solvent medium in the presence of magnesium) a disubstituted cyanoacetyl chloride of the formula <FORM:0831366/IV (b)/2> with an ester of an unsubstituted or substituted malonic acid of the formula <FORM:0831366/IV (b)/3> cyclizing the resulting product into a substituted 4-hydroxyglutaconimide (I,R = R3 = H) and treating this with at least one alkylating agent to introduce R and also R3 when this is other than hydrogen; (c) the combination of process (b) with the preparation of the cyanoacetyl chloride by treating the corresponding acid with phosphorus pentachloride; (d) the combination of process (c) with the preparation of the acid by hydrolysis of an ester thereof; (e) the combination of process (d) with the preparation of the disubstituted cyanoacetic ester by condensing an ester of the monosubstituted cyanoacetic acid with a halide of the second substituent to be introduced, in the presence of sodium ethoxide. The substituted glutaconimides are useful as sedative, anticonvulsant and hypnotic agents.
