Abstract
Wear-resistant bodies composed substantially wholly of alumina (i.e. at least 96%) are prepared by hot pressing at a temperature of at least 1400 DEG C. and a pressure of at least 1000 p.s.i., a gamma alumina powder having a surface area of over 200 square metres/gram (corresponding to a mean particle size of about 0.01 microns or less), or by hot pressing under the same conditions a gamma-alumina monohydrate of such fineness as would on calcination result in a gamma alumina powder having a surface area of over 200 square metres/gram. The pressing is preferably carried out at a temperature of 1400 DEG C. to 1700 DEG C. and a pressure of 1000 p.s.i. to 5000 p.s.i. The resulting alumina bodies may be employed in the manufacture of cutting tools, thread guides, nozzles, and wire-drawing dies. In examples, discs prepared by the above process, having a density of from 3.92 to 3.94 gm/cc., were shaped into lathe cutting tool tips by guiding with a diamond abrasive wheel.
