Abstract

The invention comprises 9a ,11b -oxido-steroids of the D 1-allopregnene, D 6-allopregnene, D 1,4 pregnadiene or D 4:6-pregnadiene series, and a process for the preparation thereof which includes the step of reacting a corresponding 9a -halo-11b -hydroxy steroid with a dehydrohalogenating agent. Suitably the D 1, D 6, D 1,4 or D 4,6 - 9a - chloro - 11b - hydroxy steroid may be reacted with a salt of a strong base and a weak acid, such as an alkali metal carbonate (e.g. potassium carbonate) or an alkali metal alkoxide (e.g. sodium methoxide). The 9a ,11b -oxide steroid may then be reacted with hydrobromic or hydroiodic acid to form the corresponding 9a -halo derivative. An example describes the preparation of 9a ,11b -oxide- D 1, allopregnene - 17,21 - diol - 3,20 - dione, 9a ,11b -oxido - D 1,4- and 9a ,11b - oxido - D 4,6 - pregnadiene-17,21-diol-3,20-dione.
