An electroluminescent sign or display comprises a transparent base 10, Fig. 1, a transparent conducting layer 11, an electroluminescent phosphor layer 12, insulating material 13 extending over the areas of the phosphor other than the display pattern from which light emission is required and a second conducting layer 14 extending over the material 13 and the pattern. A light reflecting layer may be included between the layers 12 and 14. Various methods of applying the insulating layer, including a silk-screen process are described.
