PURPOSE:To obtain an EL (Electroluminescence) element with a high brightness by forming the interfaces between a luminous layer and insulating layers in a wavy or uneven form. CONSTITUTION:In a membranous EL element formed by laminating the first insulating layer 3, a luminous layer 4, the second insulating layer 5, and a rear side electrode 6 in this order on the upper side of a transparent electrode 2 furnished on a substrate 1, and in which the EL luminescence is obtained by applying an AC voltage between the both electrodes 2 and 6, the interfaces between the first insulating layer 3 and the luminous layer 4, and/or between the luminous layer 4 and the second insulating layer 5 are formed in a wavy or uneven form. As a result, the area of the interface per unit display color element area can be increased, the number of electrons emitted from the interface can be made more when the electric field is applied, and the electrons hit and excite numerous luminous centers to generate a high brightness.
