858,895. Electroluminescent signs. MILLER, J. D. Oct. 28, 1959 [Jan. 5, 1959],No.36541/59. Class 39(1). The indicia on an electroluminescent display panel comprising a metal, e.g. steel base 1, Fig. 1, an insulating layer 2, a phosphor layer 3, a transparent conducting layer 4 and a transparent insulating layer 5, are formed by removing at least the transparent layers 4 and 5 leaving indicia areas 6 which are preferably filled with conducting paint 7 to connect the severed portions of layer 4 and an insulating filler 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, areas 9 are formed by removing layers 3, 4 and 5 leaving luminescent indicia 10. In another construction, layers 2, 3, 4 and 5 are removed in the non-luminescent non-indicia areas and a further insulating layer is applied to the uncovered metal base having a meniscus to protect the upstanding edges of the indicia areas. Alternatively sufficient portions of the layer 2 may be left adjacent the indicia areas to prevent arcing between the metal base 1 and the conducting layer 4.
