Abstract

1315125 Cathode ray tubes EMI Ltd 30 July 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 40932/69 Heading H1D [Also in Division C4] A cathode ray tube for oscilloscope use comprises a phosphor screen scanned by the beam and includes means for exciting parts of the screen by an electric field to provide an illuminated graticule. The phosphor may comprise material which is both electro-luminescent and cathodo-luminescent, or the screen may comprise two separate phosphors either mixed together or in layers. The screen may be provided with an aluminium backing layer which serves as one electrode for the electric field; the other electrode may comprise either a semi-transparent or an opaque conductive graticule formed on the opposite side of the screen, e.g. on the inner surface of the faceplate, or may comprise a continuous semi-transparent conductive film on which graticule markings are formed of opaque material or of electro-luminescent material. A further form of graticule comprise two parallel tracks of conductive material with provision for applying a suitable voltage between the tracks to produce electro-luminescence.
