Abstract

1445840 Lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [27 Nov 1972] 54781/72 Heading F4R A laminated illuminating panel for instrument consoles comprises a light-transmitting core 18 with openings 11, 12, and 13 for switch shafts and instrument dials, an opaque layer 29 on one face of the core, the layer having openings corresponding to the openings 11, 12, and 13 and perforations arranged to form legends 15, a plurality of lamps (19) within the core for back illumination of the legends and side illumination of the dials and switches, and a printed circuit 21 deposited on the other face of the core for supplying power to the lamps. The printed circuit, which is protected by an insulating layer 25 is connected to a two-pole input terminal (22). The core 18 may be opalescent but is preferably transparent, a diffusing layer being interposed between the core and the opaque layer 29. The lamps (19) are preferably held in pockets (20) in the core by transparent potting compound but may alternatively be removably mounted in lamp sockets incorporated in the panel. The layer 29 may include a thin transparent substrate forming windows over the areas 30 and 31.
