1467738 Alpha-numeric displays GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 5 Sept 1975 [12 Sept 1974] 39834/74 Heading G5C An electroluminescent display panel comprises a transparent substrate 1; a patterned transparent conductive layer on the substrate providing electrodes 2, leads 3 to 10 and contacts 13 to 20; an insulating coating 21, 22 covering the leads and delineating the edge of each electrode or group of electrodes, the coating containing apertures 23 to 28 exposing a portion of each lead; conductive strips 29 to 34 transverse to the leads which overlie the apertures and contact the leads; and an electroluminescent layer. Additional transverse strips 11, 12 may be provided by the conductive layer. As shown the electrodes are arranged to form a plurality of figure of eight arrays and common electrodes cover each array. The strips 29 to 34 11, 12 interconnect corresponding electrode leads of each array. Outer portions 22 of the insulation are thicker than the inner portion 21. The laminate is encapsulated in a N 3 and O 2 atmosphere with a getter for water vapour. Drive circuitry may be mounted on the substrate. Prior to use the phosphor is subject to "forming" in which the potential is gradually increased. In another arrangement all the electrodes are on one side of the phosphor.
