829,168. Charging heat-treatment furnaces. IPSEN, H. N. April 17, 1958 [June 26, 1957], No. 12258/58. Class 51 (2). Mechanism for moving a workpiece 16 along a predetermined path into a furnace, comprises an endless chain 24 with a straight run 26 along part of the path and means 49 for engaging and moving the workpiece 16 along the first part of the path, a bar 27 pivoted at one end to the chain, and means on the free end of the bar 27 for engaging the workpiece and moving it along the remainder of the path. A chain 24 at either side of a platform formed by rollers 20 has a straight run 26 along either side of the platform and a run 28 guided along a curve having its centre a below the furnace end of the platform. While the pivots 51 of the bars 27 move along the curved run 28 their free ends rest on guides 56 at the centre a of the curved run. As the pivots reach the straight runs 26, the free ends of the bars move up the guides 56 between the end rollers of the platform so that a plate 54 secured between them engages the workpiece 16 to push it into the furnace. The abutment 49 for moving the work 16 along the first part of the path engages a switch 57 to reverse the driving rotor when the bar pivot 51 reaches the end of the straight run 26, and a second switch 58 engages the pivot 51 to restore the forward motion when the bars 27 are fully retracted. In a modification, the mechanism is arranged to pull a workpiece out of a furnace, in which case the pusher bar secured between the free ends of the bars is replaced by pawls which can pass below the work in the furnace and engage its inner end when the movement of the bars is reversed.
