Abstract
828,596. Cutting-off lathes; mandrels. ETNA MACHINE CO. July 14, 1958 [April 2, 1958], No. 22546/58. Class 83 (3). A device for end-cropping and producing a test sample from lengths of welded seam tubing comprises a roller conveyer R, Fig. 1, which feeds a non-rotating-tube T to a stop in a housing C, said tube being clamped at A and severed by a rotating cutter-head B. In operation, the tube T, Fig. 2, is fed through a collet-chuck 10, 11 in housing A, passes over an inside colletchuck 14, 15 and engages a stop 16. Chuck 10, 11 is actuated to clamp the tube, after which chuck 14, 15 is expanded to grip the inside bore of the sample to be cut, Fig. 3. Cutters 12, 13 in the rotating cutter head move radially inward to crop the end EC and produce a sample TS. The cutters are then retracted radially and collet 10, 11 releases the tube, which is then withdrawn, and collet 14, 15, carrying the testsample and the cropped end, is moved to the right past stop 16, which is moved upwardly, the sample and cropped end being ejected after the collet 15a has been released. Another tube is then inserted in collet 10, 11, and the sequence of operations repeated. The mechanism may be electrically-operated and the cycle of operations energized by contact of the tube with stop 16. Cutters 13 preferably complete their cut before cutters 12, so that the sample remains supported by collet 10 as long as possible. The amounts of end-crop may be varied by adjustment of stop 16.
