Abstract

901,393. Making helically seamed tubes; shearing; milling. KUCKENS, A. Dec. 23, 1958 [April 5, 1958], No. 30520/60. Divided out of 901,391. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] A method of cutting off tubes from tubing emerging from a machine for making helically welded tubing from strip comprises first machining a circular V-shaped groove in the wall of the tube and then completely severing the remaining material of the tube wall. Steel strip 1a is coiled into tubular form in a forming tool 2 and adjacent edges are welded together to form a helical seam. The rotating formed tubing is delivered on to a carriage 3, on which cutting off is effected when the end of the tubing engages a stop 4 on a rod 7 connecting the carriage 3 and a carriage 6. After cutting, the severed tube is removed by accelerating supporting rolls 5b by a motor 5a, the carriages then returning. The carriage 3 comprises, Fig. 3, a frame 36 running, on wheels 37, on rails 5, and carrying tube-locating rolls 44, a milling head 40 and a rotary cutter blade 41. In operation a programme selector operated by a stop 47 on the carriage engaging a limit switch 48 on a rail 5 starts a pump 49 on the carriage to cause hydraulic means 45 to move the rolls 44 on to the tube, then, after some delay, to cause hydraulic means 42 to feed the milling cutter 40 into the tube, until the tube is engaged by a depth control roller 39. The cutter 41 is then moved in by hydraulic means 41 to sever the tube at the apex of the groove cut by the milling cutter 40. The groove may be produced by grinding. A weighted saddle G rests on the tube to damp vibrations when milling and cutting. Specification 901,392 also is referred to.
