Abstract
26,067. Judge, A. Nov. 11. Coiling; shearing; soldering.-Tubes are produced from two strips wound helically, one breaking joint with the other, and soldered, and not from a single strip with a stepped edge as described in Specification 14,172/00 with particular reference to the tin rollers of machinery for spinning yarn &c. The leading ends of the two strips are secured together with the requisite overlap, as by a rivet or by welding, and the strips are fed by rolls D, E, Fig. 1, to a coiling-chamber similar to that described in the above-mentioned Specification, but having the antifriction rollers set at right-angles to the strip and tapered to suit the curvature of the tube. The coiling action of the shunt-guide block is assisted by three pairs of rolls G driven by a perforated steel band H from ore of the feed-rolls. As the tube leaves the solder bath, blasts of hot air from jets M, Fig. 4, which also act as scrapers, remove surplus solder. The growing tube travels along, and is supported by driven rolls O, P adjustable as to height and distance apart by screws and worm-wheels. At a predetermined length, the end of the tube engages a dog 18, Fig. 9, connected to a tumbler lever 5, Fig. 5, which clutches a screw Y to gearing driven from one of the rolls G to traverse an arm S at the same speed as the tube. The arm S traverses along, and is oscillated upon, a shaft T, chain geared to a cutter R at the end of the arm, consisting of thin steel segments clamped between side disks. The arm is oscillated to bring the cutter into and out of cutting engagement by a pin 11 engaging in a switch cam track. After a length of tube is cut off, the screw Y is reversed to return the arm, and is then brought to rest. The dog 18 is slidably mounted in a lever 7 pivoted at 71 and is retained against a spring 19 by a pin 26 carried by an arm 24. The tube N engages the dog and deflects the lever 7, moving the bar 6 and tripping the pin 26. A bell-crank lever 20 engaged by a stud on the bar 9 resets the trip mechanism. The bar 6, Fig. 5, carries a pivoted end 6<1> held up by a lug 9<1> on the bar 9. When the lever 5 is thrown over to the left by the bar, the screw Y is rotated, and the arm S and attached bar 9 are traversed to the right until a cross-bar 22 on the plate 10 carried by the bar 9 engages a pin 23 and throws the lever 5 across to the right, reversing the screw Y. The movement of the bar 9 allows the end 6' to drop, thus allowing the movement of the lever 5. The arm and bar are returned to the left until a lug on the plate 10 engages a headed link 27, and raises the lever 5 to its inoperative po3ition, bringing the parts to rest until restarted by the trip mechanism 18.
