3010. Bishop, T. Feb. 5. Oscillating type for cutting rectilinearly.- In apparatus for cutting webs of paper &c. into sheets, as in box-covering machines, wherein the requisite length of paper is drawn by hand past the cutters, special devices are provided to cause a sufficient length of the web to protrude beyond the cutters after each operation to enable the operator to grasp it without danger of cutting the hands. According to one construction, a carriage c slidable on guides d carries the fixed and pivoted cutters a, b. The arm k that carries the cutter b is rocked by a link l connected to a treadle j, and this is connected by a link i to a pivoted arm h, which carries a pin g working in a cam-groove e in the carriage c whereby this is reciprocated, its movement being arrested immediately before cutting takes place. Thus, when the cutter rises, the carriage c recedes and leaves the end of the web m. projecting beyond the cutters. According to modifications, the carriage may be reciprocated by a rack and a pinion, or by a cam and a spring, or, according to the Provisional Specification, the carriage may be stationary and the web projected by rollers in the rear of the cutters, or the web may be projected by a sliding gripper.
