Abstract

827,846. Wheels for rail vehicles. WORTHINGTON, P. M. Feb. 3, 1956 [Feb. 18, 1955], No. 4862/55. Class 103(6) [Also in Group XXXIV] To provide a correcting force to damp out the sinusoidal oscillations of the path Cf of a railway vehicle or crane when laterally displaced or skewed on the track, the vehicle is mounted on at least two pairs of oppositely disposed laterally spaced wheels with the wheels 5 of at least one pair mounted for independent rotation about fixed axes 6 and provided each with tread portions 5a, 5b which flare outwardly from a medial waist, and with the wheels 1 of at least one other pair mounted to rotate together on a common fixed axis 3 and provided each with a tread portion 1b which is inclined to the axis 3. As shown, the wheels 1 may each comprise also a cylindrical tread portion 1a. Alternatively the wheels 1 may be conical across their full tread width. The Specification describes various arrangements of the pairs of wheels 1 and 5 for a vehicle mounted on four pairs of wheels.
