In a method of cleaning a tubular article, the latter is enclosed in a sound-proof chamber and a stream of air is passed along the article while the article is subjected to high-intensity sound. As shown, a sound-insulated housing 11 is provided with a door 12 mounted on a horizontal shaft 13 turned by a motor 18 through the medium of a speed-reduction gear 19, belt 20 and a slip clutch 21, when a pin 22 is withdrawn from two associated notches 17 oppositely disposed in a disc 23 secured to the shaft, the pin being normally held in one of the notches by a cylinder supplied with air via a magnetic control valve. With the door closed and the shaft locked by the' pin, one or other of two bundles of glass tubes 26, 27 held in carriers 33 are located within the housing and aligned between the output end of a transducer comprising a siren 30, and a foreign-matter-receiving funnel 31 ; air is supplied to the siren through manually-operable and magnetic valves. Exteriorly of the housing and in communication with the funnel 31 is an auxiliary housing 36 provided with a baffled air exhaust passage 37 which includes a basin containing liquid over which the air passes.
