Abstract

1,195,906. Oxidation of hydrocarbons. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 20 July, 1967 [25 July, 1966], No. 33345/67. Heading C2C. In a process for the oxidation of cycloaliphatic or paraffinic hydrocarbons comprising the use of molecular oxygen in the presence of a boron compound adjuvant, wherein there is produced a vapour stream containing hydrocarbon and one or more of orthoboric acid, metaboric acid and hydrocarbon borate ester, and said vapour stream is cooled to condense the condensible materials, the vapour stream is cooled by passing it through an indirect heat exchange condensation zone, and before the ratio Ux/Ui wherein Ux is the heat transfer coefficient at that instant during operation and Ui is the clean overall heat transfer coefficient for the condenser, is less than 0.5 said vapour stream is diverted through a second condensation zone, arranged in parallel with the first, and said first condensation zone is then cleaned using e.g. water or the alcohol produced in the oxidation. In examples cyclohexane is oxidized to cyclohexanol, chiefly, and cyclohexanone and a C 1-4 paraffin to the corresponding alcohol and ketone.
