[Also in Group XIII] A thermally insulated cabinet comprises inner and outer walls moulded from a settable thermally insulating material, sandwiching between them an intervening thickness of the material expanded into foam form. A refrigerator comprises an upper housing 1, containing the compressor and condsener, and a lower cabinet 2 fixed to the upper housing with a door 4 hinged on a horizontal axis. The walls may be formed of polystyrene shells 7 and 9 coated with adhesive to receive in the space between the walls a polystyrene foam moulding 8. The foam may be formed in situ between the walls by filling the double walled box formed by the cabinet walls with granulated polystyrene and by injecting steam. Alternatively the foam insulation may be preformed, coated with asbestos and inserted into a mould so that the walls are moulded about the insulation. In a further embodiment the walls are built up, in a mould 31, of layers of resin 32, 34 and glass wool or the like 33, before being polymerised. The polyester casing is then filled with polystyrene granules and the open face of the mould closed by steam injection apparatus. The face 37 of the insulation not covered by polyester resin may be so left or covered by paint or cardboard or the like. Any foam having a polyester basis may be used or an avinyl foam known as Klegecel.
