Abstract

Aminoplastic resins are prepared by reacting at elevated temperatures: (i) urea or an aminotriazine; (ii) paraformaldehyde; (iii) an unsubstituted aliphatic monohydric alcohol of 1-4 C; and (iv) a saturated or monoethylenically unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of more than 10 C, or a mixture thereof, such acids being free from any polyethylenically unsaturated acids, or abietic acid, or a mixture thereof. Aminotriazines mentioned are melamine, ammeline and ammelide; alcohols mentioned are ethanol and methanol; acids mentioned are stearic, oleic and palmitic. The resins are soluble in petroleum ether, benzene, cyclohexane, toluene, trichlorethylene, and tetrachlorethylene, and if modified may be soluble in or form an emulsion with water or acid. The resins may be hardened by acids or acid-forming substances. Uses.-As impregnating and film-forming substances especially for waterproofing textiles.
