Abstract
A resin dispersion comprises a melamineformaldehyde resin, a non-basic, water-soluble dihydric or trihydric alcohol and at least .4 parts hydroxy-acetic acid per one part of resin. The melamine-formaldehyde resin is in the hydrophobic state and is insoluble in water in concentrations below 35 per cent, but soluble in concentrations from 35 per cent to 70 per cent, and is preferably a trimethylol melamine resin which is soluble in water only in concentrations between 50 and 65 per cent. Alcohols specified are ethylene glycol and glycerol. Proportions specified are 1 part resin to 2 parts di- or tri-hydric alcohol, to .4-.6 parts hydroxy-acetic acid. In examples, various melamine-formaldehyde resins are mixed with glycerol or ethylene glycol and with hydroxyacetic acid. Specification 593,947, [Group VIII], is referred to.
