Abstract
A process for the production of a resin dispersion consists in the steps of dispersing a thermo-setting melamine-formaldehyde resin in the partially condensed or polymerized hydrophobic state, dispersed in a liquid medium comprising a non-basic, water-soluble dihydric or trihydric alcohol, and adding to the resulting dispersion a stabilizing agent comprising lactic acid in the proportion of at least 0.2 part of the acid per 1 part of the resin. The resin is insoluble in water at concentrations below 35 per cent, and soluble between 35-70 per cent. The preferred resin is partially condensed trimethylol melamine water-soluble at concentrations between 50 and 65 per cent. Ethylene glycol and glycerine, respectively, are the preferred di- and tri-hydric alcohols. Preferably, 1 part of resin is dispersed in two parts of the alcohol and 0.6 to 1 part of lactic acid is then added. In examples (1), (3) and (4), partially condensed tri-methylol melamine is dispersed in glycerol and lactic acid and water are added; (2) ethylene glycol replaces the glycerol of example (1). The dispersion may be used to anchor moisture-proofed surface coating to regenerated cellulose film. Specifications 593,946 and 626,875, [Group VIII], are referred to.
