Abstract

The invention comprises a normally liquid, stable blend of methyl ethers of hexamethylol melamine, the average degree of methylation of the blend being between about 4.85 and 5.15 and the degree of methylolation being at least 5.75; and its production by methylating hexamethylol melamine of degree of methylolation at least 5.75, e.g. with methanol; or by reacting melamine, excess methanol and excess formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde under alkaline conditions, then adjusting to strongly acidic conditions.ALSO:Coating compositions comprise a mixture (80: 20) of a lauric acid modified baking alkyd resin and a liquid blend of methyl ethers of hexamethylol melamine, the average degree of methylation being about 4.85-5.15 and the degree of methylolation being at least 5.75 (see Division C2), with p-toluenesulphonic acid added, and the composition then thinned with xylene and butanol.ALSO:Films are drawn down on Brite steel from a composition (80 : 20) of a lauric acid modified baking alkyd resin and a liquid blend of methyl ethers of hexamethylol melamine, the average degree of methylation being about 4.85-5.15 and the degree of methylolation being at least 5.75 (see Division C2), with p-toluene sulphonic acid added and the compositions having been thinned with xylene and butanol; the films are then baked.
