Abstract
The invention comprises 2 : 6-bis-ethyleneimino-hydroquinones of which the ethylene radicals are unsubstituted or each contains one alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, containing in the 3- and 5-positions halogen atoms or lower alkoxy or alkylmercapto groups of 1-4 carbon atoms and salts thereof. The compounds are made by treating the corresponding benzoquinones with a reducing agent, for example, sodium dithionite in an alkaline medium or hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The reduction reaction is preferably carried out in an atmosphere of nitrogen or hydrogen. In a modification of the process a 2 : 6-bis-ethyleneimino-p-benzoquinone, substituted in the 3- and 5-positions by halogen atoms, is treated with an excess of an alkyl mercaptan, preferably in the presence of a condensing agent such as an alkali-metal and in a solvent such as alcohol to give directly the 3 : 5 - bis - alkylmercapto - 2 : 6 - bis-ethyleneimino-hydroquinone. The products may be converted into their salts with metals, e.g. by treatment with alkali-metal hydroxides. They are used pharmaceutically for the treatment of cancer diseases or amoebic diseases. Specified products include 3 : 5-dibromo-, 3 : 5-diethoxy- and 3 : 5-di-ethylmercapto-, 2 : 6-bis-ethyleneimino - hydroquinone. Specification 825,557 is referred to.
