Abstract
1378446 Dicyanovinyl compounds CIBAGEIGY AG 20 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971 15 Aug 1972] 43585/72 Heading C2C Aromatic, heteroaromatic or aliphatic compounds containing at least one radical of the formula wherein R is an H atom, or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical, are obtained by reacting a compound of formula wherein X is a halogen atom with (a) an aromatic or heteroaromatic compound which bears one or more electron-donating substituents with negative Brown substitution constants # p <SP>+</SP> and without mobile H atoms, (b) a #-excess-heteroaromatic compound, or (c) a CH-acid compound, in the absence of Lewis acid, in an anhydrous, preferably organic, medium, and optionally adding an acid-binding agent after the reaction with the 2,2-dicyanoethylene compound has been effected. Specified solvents are aliphatic and aromatic optionally chlorinated hydrocarbons, aliphatic ethers and low M.W. fatty acids. When the aromatic or heteroaromatic compound contains strongly basic groups as electron-donating substituents, the reaction with 1-halogeno-2,2-dicyano-ethylenes is carried out in a stepwise manner by reacting half the basic compound present to give the required 2,2- dicyanovinyl compound and then releasing the remainder of the basic compound from its hydrogen halide salt by adding an equivalent amount of an acid-binding agent. When the aromatic or heteroaromatic compounds are non- basic or at most weakly basic, the reaction may be carried out without the use of an acid-binding agent, the hydrogen halide produced being optionally removed by a stream of gas. Examples are given which illustrate the process of the invention.
