Abstract
The invention comprises norpethidine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0826274/IV (b)/1> (wherein Y represents an alkylthio group and R a straight or branched chain alkylene group of 1-6 carbon atoms), their acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts, and the preparation thereof by reacting norpethidine with a compound Y-R-Hal (wherein Hal represents Cl, Br or I). The products are useful as analgesics and, in the case of the quaternary salts, as ganglion-blocking and anticholinergic agents. In examples, norpethidine is reacted in the presence of sodium carbonate with 2-chloroethyl methyl and ethyl sulphides, by refluxing in amyl alcohol. The hydrobromides of the products and the methiodide of the first product (Y-R- #sC b -methylthioethyl) are described.
