[Also in Groups XIX and XXXIV] A fault is detected in an element or structural part of a mechanical press having mating surfaces held together by pressure, e.g. a brake or clutch, and operation of the machine is prevented if a fault occurs, by applying air under pressure from a supply line 14 via regulator 16, conduit 13 and duct 12 to the space between the mating surfaces, and utilising the drop in pressure when a fault occurs to actuate the piston 19 of a machine interlock 20, 21. The invention is shown applied to a friction brake or clutch the surfaces 8, 9 of which are held against the friction surfaces 5 by spring pressure acting on the hub 6. Should the brake.or clutch become inoperative due e.g. to fracture of the spring the leakage of air at the friction surfaces lowers the pressure sufficiently to operate the interlock and also actuate a visual or audible alarm by a pressure switch 17.
