Class 146(1) A lateral filing system comprises folders or guide cards for documents which rest at their bases on a support with the base of each folder or card held in place by a bar which interengages with tranverse members of the support in a manner permitting sideways sliding of the bar along the transverse members and permitting disengagement of the bar therefrom upon movement of the bar solely in a vertical plane containing the bar in response solely to force applied to the front end of the bar, followed by removal of the folder or card forwards in its own plane. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the folders 2 comprise a long leaf and short leaf 6 with a narrow base 8 having holes 12 through which a bar 10 is threaded, location being by a projection 14 on the bar 10 engaging a further hole 16. To vary the positions of the front of the folders, the positions of the projections 14 and/or the holes 16 may be altered. The width of the base 8 is varied by having a number of fold lines 50. The folders rest on three transverse members 18, 20 and 22 and the rear end of bar 10 engages beneath a rear transverse member 24 having an undersurface sloping rearwardly from above the level of member 22. The bars 10 are resiliently bowed upwards at 26 and terminate in a hook 28 to engage under a lip 30 on a front transverse member 32 shaped so that a front part 34 conceals the hooks 28, the bars being removable from lip 30 by a downward and rearward pressure on the part 26, and the folder and bar then being removed forwardly. The rear of member 24 acts as a stop for documents in the folders. The transverse members 18, 20, 22, 24 and 32 are mounted in holes in the flanges 44 of members 42 which rest on lugs 38 inserted in holes 40 of uprights 36 which may form part of shelving or be fixed within a cabinet. The folders may be opened as at 46, the movement being limited by plates 48 having holes engaging over the members 18, 20, 22 allowing sliding movement and limited pivotal movement. A number of alternative constructions of bar and front transverse members are shown including a straight bar with turned down front end, engaging between two front transverse members; a similar bar with an underneath lug to engage under a forward flange on a single transverse member; a bar on edge with turned back front end, engaging between the front transverse members, the bar lying in a pocket at the bottom of a guide card; and a curved over front to a straight bar to engage a round transverse member.
