Puncturing of a diaphragm 15 of a gas cylinder discharge device is effected by an explosiveactuated ram 24 having at one end of a reduced portion 35 an enlarged cutting head 49 which completely removes a slug from the centre of the diaphragm 15, and the annular passage bounded by the periphery of the hole so made and by the ram portion 35 passing therethrough forms a discharge passage connecting a bore 16 to which the gas container is connected to an outlet bore 18. The cutting edge 52 forms a rim surrounding a recessed portion 51 of the head 49 and slug so removed becomes dished and is caught in a pocket 13. Forward displacement of the ram is arrested when a tapered portion 48 thereof abuts and seals against a tapered portion 36 of the ram cylinder 26.
