Abstract

823,572. Dynamometers. HEENAN & FROUDE Ltd. Oct. 1, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 26582/56. Class 106 (2). [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXIV] A rotary absorption dynamometer in which power is absorbed by liquid in which a rotor R rotates co-operating with a stator S 1 , has liquid supplied to the working compartment R 1 by a pump P 1 at a rate proportional to the speed of rotation of the rotor R, and restrictive passages L 1 -L 4 surrounding the shaft S of the rotor and providing a non-contact seal between the shaft S and the stator S1. As shown, water in a compartment B3 is drawn up by the pump P1 and passed by a control valve (not shown) (see Group XXIX), and passages S 4 , D, to the working compartment R 1 . A discharge orifice O is provided to drain the water into a compartment B 2 . The pump P 1 is protected from possible ingress of air by a labyrinth L 4 which is kept filled by a pipe Q 2 leading from the water inlet supply. Water which passes through labyrinth L 4 drains into the compartment B 2 . A compartment Q 5 between labyrinths L 2 , L 3 is in communication with pipe Q 2 and thus, if the working compartment R 1 is nearly empty, water flows from Q 2 into Q 5 and along both labyrinths L 2 , L 3 . If, however, the compartment R 1 is nearly full, water flows from there along labyrinth L 2 to compartment Q 5 and thence either by labyrinth L 3 to the pump or by pipe Q 2 to drain into compartment B 2 . The water draining to compartment B 2 is recirculated, passing over a plate W 2 into the compartment B 3 with the exception of an amount equivalent to the amount of cooling water added. This portion flows over a plate W 1 to the drain compartment B 1 .
