Abstract

Readily soluble, non-hygroscopic, protective coatings are produced on cakes of soap by dipping the cake into an aqueous solution of a water-soluble film-forming substance, suitably a salt of a high molecular weight acid but preferably polyvinyl alcohol, the solution also containing a surface-active substance which improves the ability of the solution to wet the soap. Such surface active substance may be an alkylaryl sulphonate, an alkyl sulphate, a cationic detergent, or a non-ionic ethylene oxide adduct, but is preferably an alkyl sulphonate or a sulphosuccinic acid ester. In order to facilitate redissolution of the film, glycol, polyglycol ethers or glycerol may be added to the film-forming solution.
