Abstract

A liquid oven or grill cleaning composition comprises water, at least one alkali metal hydroxide, furfuryl alcohol, and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. A glycerol or glycol humectant, and a surfactant may also be included. From 1 to 10% by weight alkali metal hydroxide may be used. Preferably the ratio furfuryl: tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is at least 1 : 1, and the alcohol mixture constitutes 0.1-5% by weight of the composition. Suitable surfactants include sulphate esters, alkyl and aryl sulphonates, amines and quaternary ammonium compounds, particularly the ammonium salt of the sulphate ester of an alkylphenoxy polyoxy ethylene ethanol and sodium dodecyl diphenyl oxide disulphonate. The preferred humectant is propylene glycol. Water constitutes 50-95% by weight of the composition. The cleaner may be used at room temperature but is preferably heated or applied to a warm oven. It can be ejected as a fine foam from an aerosol spray employing butane as propellant.
