Class 137 In a method for ventilating a tanker compartment 10 having a pipe 15, 16 extending to just above the bottom thereof through which a liquid cargo can be withdrawn, a portion 15 of the pipe is sealed from the atmosphere by a valve 20 and air is blown through the pipe 15, 16 under substantial pressure to just above the bottom of the compartment 10 to collect vapours from the pipe 15, 16 and the compartment 10 for ejection through an opening, e.g. a hatch 13, to the atmosphere. A dehumidifier 28 removes water vapour from the air incoming from cowl 23, which is driven by a blower 22 (which may be of the centrifugal type, preferably driven by a steam turbine 24 supplied by a line 25), through a valve 21 and pipe 19 after heating by the exhaust steam from the blower, e.g. in a heat-exchanger 27. Nozzles 17 on the pipe 16 act to direct air from it to the bottom of the compartments 10, a control valve 16a between the portions 15 and 16 of each pipe being operated by a reach rod 16b.
