Abstract
A process for the production of spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises adding to a bath of molten cast iron containing not more than 0.03% sulphur an amount of spheroidizing agent, selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, neodymium, samarium, and praeseodymium, sufficient to spheriodize at least some of the free carbon present in the melt. The amount of spheroidizing agent added should be sufficient to give a residual amount in the iron of 0.02% to 0.06%. The agent may comprise lanthanum plus neodymium e.g. 40% neodymium, 60% lanthanum, with cerium present only in impurity amounts. The metal need not be cast immediately after the addition of the agent and the cast metal may be remelted and recast and the recast metal will also contain spheroidal graphite. Ferrosilicon may be added as graphitizing agent. Specifications 645,862 and 718,177 are referred to.
