Abstract

822,704. Drying tubular film in long lengths. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 20, 19156 [July 13, 1955], No. 20249/55. Class 34(1) Tubular organic thermoplastic film 2, Provisional Figure, is dried in an inflated condition in an apparatus comprising a passageway 1 having a diameter greater than that of the inflated film and a passageway 3 of diameter equal to that of the film. A circular channel 4, having three equally spaced suction tubes 5 through which air and water are removed, forms an annular space around the film between the passageways. In another apparatus a passageway 6, Complete Figure, in the water-cooled wall of the cooling apparatus of Specification 741,763 [Group IV(a)] and an aperture 1a in the upper wall of a suction box 4a are of equal diameter whilst the diameter of an aperture in a lower wall 8 is greater than that of 1a but has an annular rubber seal 3a whose internal diameter in unflexed condition is less than the diameter of the inflated film 2. Water and air are drawn off through respective outlets 5a, 9. An air inlet or inlets (not shown) is/are also provided and the suction box pressure may be regulated by adjusting the amounts of air admitted and removed. The seal 3a may be replaced by a rigid annular member having a passageway of polished metal. A scraper ring may be used to remove some water from the film before it enters the box 4a.
