822,582. Screw-and-nut gearing. ROTAX Ltd. Jan. 17, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 2936/57. Class 80 (3). In a jack or other screw-and-nut device employing recirculating balls the nut comprises two cylindrical parts a, a<SP>1</SP> mounted for relative angular adjustment within a sleeve b in order to prevent backlash, each nut part having a separate train of balls. Each nut part a, a<SP>1</SP> abuts a central shoulder c in the sleeve and is prevented from rotation by interengaging castellations g. When angular adjustment of one or other nut part is required the associated set of balls is withdrawn and the nut part is axially retracted to disengage the castellations. The thread grooves are wider than the ball diameter, Fig. 2 (not shown), so that only one nut part is operative for each direction of movement of the screw.
