Abstract
822,346. Filling barrels. PLENTY & SON Ltd. March 11, 1957 [March 9, 1956], No. 7469/56. Class 21. Barrel-filling apparatus comprises a delivery pipe attached to a reversible pump and extendable relative to a fixed portion of the apparatus to enter a barrel ; reversal of the pump retracts the pipe and exhausts the apparatus. A pipe 10 having a spring-loaded non-return nozzle 30 passes through a fixed cylinder 12 and a piston 18 to which it is secured ; a pump connection 20 has branches 22, 24 leading respectively to the pipe 10 and the upper part of the cylinder 12, the latter branch being fitted with a non- return valve 26. Pressure on a handle 36 opens a valve 38 to allow liquid from a header tank to flow through pipes 40 and 42 into the cylinder 12 so that the pipe 10 is extended as required ; the pump then forces the liquid through the nozzle 30 into a barrel 28. On reversal of the pump, the valve 26 opens and the liquid is exhausted from the cylinder 12 and pipe 10 so that the piston 18 moves upwards, retracting the pipe 10 : on reaching the cylinder top a disc valve 32 closes an opening leading to the branch 24, thus the piston and pipe are held retracted.
