Abstract

822,132. Rolling. PLATZER, F. Jan. 14, 1958 [Jan. 26, 1957], No. 1279/58. Addition to 717,203 and 758,073. Class 83 (4). In a rolling mill according to the parent Specification, each single backing-roll is replaced by a pair of backing-rolls, each of which comprises a plurality of roll sections arranged along an axle with spacing elements therebetween, each of said sections comprising an inner ring fixed to the axle and an outer ring rotatably mounted on said inner ring, the peripheral surfaces of some of said inner rings being concentric and some eccentric to the axle. Each working roll 16 is linked to an annular roller cage 34 by a pivoted lever 36 which carries bearings 98 for the roll 16 and carrier elements 99 to support one of the backing-rolls 25 of a pair. The lever 36 has a tension-spring 109 to ensure continuous abutment between the working and the backing rolls and a counterweight 110 to counter the centrifugal force tending to lift said rolls due to the rotation of the roller cage 34. Each backing roll comprises concentric inner rings 105, alternate with eccentric inner rings 106, such that the outer rings 102 mounted on rings 106 support the working rolls and the outer rings 101 mounted on rings 105 bear on a supporting body 20. The rings 102 are wider than the rings 101 and in each pair of backing rolls the wider rings 102 are offset, thereby reducing the tendency to form grooves in the working roll face.
